Burger King’s new Bacon Sundae is sure to both gross out and excite people in equal measure.

Launched as part of the fast food chain’s new summer menu, the Burger King Bacon Sundae is made up of traditional sundae elements such as vanilla ice cream, chocolate fudge and caramel, but reworks the dessert with a healthy (or unhealthy, depending on how you look at it) dose of smoked bacon pieces throughout and a strip of bacon sticking out of the top.

Tested and approved in Nashville, Tennessee, the Bacon Sundae sits alongside other Southern-style items on the new menu, such as a Memphis Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwich, a Carolina BBQ Whopper, Sweet Potato Fries and Frozen Lemonade, all available for a limited time only this summer.

As unfamiliar as it may be to some palates, the Burger King Bacon Sundae taps into this year’s salty-sweet trend (check out Nigella Lawson’s Bacon Brownie recipe here if you don’t believe us), and according to reports, it’s not quite as bad as it sounds, with the salty bacon cutting through the cloying sweetness of the sundae’s chocolate fudge and caramel.

However, if the bacon doesn’t put you off, the nutritional statistics might – the Bacon Sundae weighs in at a substantial 510 calories, with a lardy 18 grams of fat and 61 grams of sugar. That said, it IS a Bacon Sundae from Burger King – so we’d be very surprised if it was as nutritious as a piece of fruit.
