Fromage fans, get ready: London’s first cheese bus is coming

cheese bus.JPG

If there’s one thing we’re truly obsessed with in life, it’s cheese.

Whether it’s visiting the capital’s newest cheese bar (yes, that’s a real thing), using science to create the perfect cheese toastie, listing off the surprising health benefits of fromage, or even finding out what kind of cheese we’re most like, we could read and write about the stuff all day long… and don’t even get us started on eating it.

So, naturally, we were very excited to learn that a cheese bus is set to roll into Camden very soon.

That’s right: Matthew Carver – aka the founder of The Cheese Bar – is bringing the dreams of lactose-tolerant foodies to life with his brand-new venture.

He’s set to launch the Urban Dairy Tour on 9 June, in a bid to take passengers deep into “London’s underground cheese scene”.

Sounds gouda to us (sorry).

The Cheese Bus – an original Routemaster from the Sixties – will be parked up at The Cheese Bar on the morning of the 9 June, as part of the London Food Month celebrations.

Once all of the passengers are seated, the wheels on the bus will start going round and round like wheels of edam, taking them on a tour of all the cheesiest destinations in the capital.

Think the family-run Kupros Dairy in Cheshunt, La Latteria in Acton, Bermondsey’s Maltby Street Market, the nearby Kappacadein Dairy, and Peckham’s Gringa Dairy.

Speaking with the Standard, Carver has revealed that passengers will spend roughly an hour in each destination. This will include “an explanation of the history of the venue and the cheese it makes plus tastings”.

Tastings being, of course, the most important part of the trip.

“This tour is about celebrating the best cheeses in London and their makers, as a lot of people don’t realise great cheese is being made in the capital,” said the real-life Father Cheesemas.

“It is an opportunity to brag about how much is going on in the city. And an excuse to hire a big bus.”

Once The Cheese Bus has finished trundling you from dairy to dairy, it will whisk you back to Carver’s successful cheese bar in Camden for an un-brie-lievable feast of “something cheesy”.

The menu hasn’t been finalised yet, but it’s thought to include plenty of the venue’s bestsellers – including grilled Somerset cheddar toasties, deep-fried mozzarella sticks, and the Breakfast Poutine, inspired by the famous French-Canadian dish, which consists of bacon gravy, candied pancetta and cheese curds, topped off with a fried egg.

There may also be a cheesy dessert in the mix: cheesecake (obviously) and a dark chocolate ice cream sundae crafted from honey and Beenleigh Blue (a sweet ewe’s milk cheese from South Devon).

If you’re interested (and why wouldn’t you be?), then prepare to loosen your purse-strings: the experience will cost £75 per head, including all tastings and food.
