A free cheese and wine festival is coming to London

Mark your calendars and invest in some super-stretch trousers, because a cheese and wine festival is coming to London – and it’s free.

The Cheese and Wine Festival will touch down in Stratford’s East Village this spring. Once upon a time (or during the London 2012 Olympics), this east London hub was the site of the Athlete’s Village – but for one weekend only, it’s being transformed into a haven for fans of all things cheesy, chocolatey, and winey.

On offer at the festival will be everything from street food (think cheeseburgers, cheesy churros and the skiers’ favourite dish, Raclette) to stalls piled high with more artisan cheeses, breads, condiments and chutneys than you can shake a stick at.

Since booze is cheese’s best friend, guests to the festival will be able to get sophisticatedly sloshed courtesy of some of the UK’s finest wine and beer producers.

Sample handcrafted, ethically-made booze from Clapham’s DVine Wines, consult with sparkling wine specialists Grays and Feather on the perfect bubbles to accompany your brie, or pop over to the Meantime Brewery bar for a pint of craft beer.

For dessert, guests can tuck into treats from luxury chocolate brands The Cocoa Lab, Zara’s Chocolate, Paul Wayne Gregory and Sir Hans Sloane.

Of course, we’d never dream of recommending an activity that wasn’t educational as well as delicious. If you want to learn more about what you’re eating and drinking as you eat and drink it, you can also sign up for one of a clutch of workshops taking place over the weekend, from ‘Cider and Cheese Tasting’ with Somerset Ploughman’s Henry Hobhouse to ‘Wines of Rioja’ with British Master of Wine Tim Atkin (yep, that’s a real title).

The Cheese and Wine Festival will be open from 12-6pm on Saturday 1 April and 11am-4pm on Sunday 2 April at Stratford’s East Village on. Entry is free. You can find out more about the event here.
