Cheese World Cup: The Champion!

It's the moment of truth.

After six weeks of frantic voting, epic matches and shocking defeats (who could forget Mozzarella getting knocked out in the semi-finals? Or Gouda's surprise exit from the first round?), we finally have a champion in the 2012 Stylist Cheese World Cup.

You voted in your hundreds in the nail-biting final that was England (Cornish Cruncher) Vs France (Vacherin), but there could only be one winner.

Give a lion-sized roar as we announce the champion of cheeses, the king of fromage, la crème de la crème of curds as...

Vacherin!!!

A staggering 412 of you voted for Waitrose Vacherin du Haut-Doubs as your cheesy hero in the final round, with readers waxing lyrical over its "gooey, moreish creamy paste" and status as "the creamiest, sexiest, most indulgent cheese."

Waitrose Cheese Expert Chris Dawson, who put Vacherin forward in the first round, said: "We are thrilled for Waitrose Vacherin to be named 'Le Grande Fromage' in the Cheese World Cup! It's a truly seasonal cheese and definitely worth the wait each year. It makes the ultimate cheeseboard centrepiece and its delicious gooeyness makes it a worthy champion ."

But it's not all about winners in this great game of cheeses, and in second place in our Cheese World Cup - just missing out on the title - came the very worthy contender that is...

Cornish Cruncher Cheddar

176 of you wrote in to tell us how much you loved this cheese in the Cheese World Cup final, with readers praising it as "so deliciously creamy" and "rough, tough, yet smooth and very very tasty."

Above all, Stylist's very first Cheese World Cup revealed to us the depth of passion that our readers associate with cheese. It all got a bit heated - especially in the finals match - as comments poured in fast and furious and people argued the case for their ultimate fromage. Here are some of our favourite comments:
