As it’s an indisputable fact that everything tastes better when it’s free, we’re drawing your attention to a fairly niche and exclusive cake giveaway happening in London.

Yes, sorry non-residents of the capital. Hang in there, hopefully your time will come.

But if you do find yourself in Zone 1 with time on your hands and a hankering for Victoria sponge between 3pm and 5pm this week (until April 28), head to Bill’s Restaurant in Victoria.

To celebrate the chain’s newest addition on Cathedral Walk, it's enticing new customers with the lure of a free wedge of the afternoon tea classic. However, as is often the way with these things, you’ll have to be quick.

“We’ve given away 140 in an hour – we’ve had to stop for today,” a worker at the store told us excitedly just after 4pm on Monday. You’ve been warned.

The branch is even handing out cups of pink lemonade or elderflower presse to wash it down.

In the meantime, if you prefer to hand over cold hard cash for your baked goods, here’s the 11 most delicious and affordable places for afternoon tea in London.
