“No one eats alone on Christmas Day” This restaurant's act of festive kindness has gone viral

“No one eats alone on Christmas Day.”

It’s a sad fact that tens of thousands will spend Christmas Day lonely or hungry, whether that’s elderly people with no friends and family, or those who find themselves homeless.

But the owners of one UK restaurant are determined that “no one eats alone” this year by throwing open the doors to anyone who finds themselves on their own come 25 December.

Shish in Sidcup originally stuck a handwritten poster on the restaurant door earlier this month, advertising a free three-course meal for “any homeless or elderly”, and stating: “We are here to sit with you.”

After a picture of the sign was shared on Facebook more than 3,000 times, the Turkish restaurant was supplied with new printed posters detailing the food on offer, including a starter of soup and cacik, a choice of mains and a dessert of rice pudding.

The sentiment touched many, with warm comments flooding the Facebook post and people continuing to share online.

Several organisations organise campaigns around this time of year to raise awareness of homelessness and loneliness at a time when most of us are surrounded by family.
