Great Gatsby: retro cuisine

Retro food is on the up right now and there's no better way to get in on the trend than with a Great Gatsby-inspired spread.

As Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan bring the glory and glitz of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel to the big screen, the Hyatt Regency London's Montagu restaurant is toasting the Roaring Twenties in style with a glittering soirée.

This weekly pop-up comes complete with a live two-man band - the Hot Dog Corn Dogs - and a delicious menu brimming with classic American dishes.

After being greeted with a coupe of champagne - from a waitress clad in a flapper-style dress and beaded headpiece - we settled down to Manhattan clam chowder and a very moreish Waldorf salad, amid the strains of jaunty swing-time jazz.

Heartier fare followed: a New York Steak Diane with pearl onions and French fries and Jimmy Butler’s slow cooked crispy pork belly.

As we were served, The Montagu restaurant was fast filling up with Twenties costumes, from a gentleman in pinstripes and a natty cravat to a group of women in lavish beads and feather accessories.

Our surroundings only added to the atmosphere of refined elegance. The Montagu is the perfect place to play out a Twenties tableau, with its ornate chandeliers and dark wood Art Deco panelling.

Perhaps best of all were the decadent desserts: pecan pie with whipped cream and an edible chocolate spoon, and white chocolate cheese cake with blueberry compote.

So for all those swingin' cats among you, get on down to the Hyatt Regency London for retro food and music guaranteed to delight (even without the added bonus of Leo and co.)

The Great Gatsby Nights are held from 6.30pm to 10.45pm every Thursday throughout May at The Montagu restaurant at Hyatt Regency London. Reservations can be made via email at montagu.hrlondon@hyatt.com or by calling +44 (0) 20 7299 2037.
