London's pay-what-you-want eaterie

Tanner Co sketch hero.jpg

They say any good relationship is built on trust.

That's clearly the sentiment behind a London restaurant's launch initiative to let customers pay whatever they want for meals.

For five days, Tanner & Co on Bermondsey Street will dish up its 'contemporary comfort food' without officially billing patrons. It asks only that foodies' contributions reflect how much they enjoyed their dishes, along with some feedback.

A brave payment scheme is not the only kooky aspect of Tanner & Co. The restaurant-come-bar's decor is 'retro gym-inspired' and it is bringing back the carvery trolley, with hanging skewers served to the table.

The menu will offer signature dishes with a twist. Starters include Crispy Spam Fritter with Piccalilli and Ale Braised Oxtail and Mushroom Spring Rolls with Onion Mayonnaise, while mains offer a fish and chips alternative in the form of Poached Hake with Smoked Leeks and Curry Sauce. Liver and Bubble and Squeak Croquettes with Onion Gravy is also on the menu.

The trust scheme runs from Thursday 23 May to Bank Holiday Monday 27 May and does not include drinks. Customers must book in advance by email or phone.
