Marmite cupcakes are set to divide the nation

A bakery has created a range of cupcakes using Marmite as the key ingredient, and they're set to cause divisions.

Adore them or loathe them, cupcakes don’t seem to be going anywhere as a treat for birthdays, weddings, or even just a Tuesday afternoon. And just to divide opinion even more, there are now cupcakes made with the ultimate ‘love it or hate it’ ingredient – Marmite.

London-based bakery Lola’s Cupcakes have just created a range of Marmite flavoured cupcakes. With a chocolate sponge casing, a salted Marmite caramel centre and topped with Marmite buttercream and chocolate ganache, there’s no escaping the salty flavour of the famous yeast extract spread.

Asher Budwig, the Managing Director of Lola’s Cupcakes tells us: “Marmite’s saltiness complements the caramel extremely well, but the centre will either be a shock, or a pleasure!”

Using Marmite certainly promises a few more vitamins and minerals within a sugary casing, but there's no guarantee of universal popularity.

From popcorn to sweet ‘n’ sour sauce, combinations of sugary and salty ingredients have historically caused mixed opinions. While salted caramel is currently the ultimate indulgence in the dessert world, other creations such as bacon jam have found it a little less easy to curry favour with foodies.

Twitter has already reacted to the concept of Marmite cupcakes, with opinions ranging unsurprisingly, from "yuck" to "I would".

The Marmite caramel cupcakes cost £2.75 each, and are stocked in Lola’s Cupcakes outlets in Selfridges, Topshop Oxford Circus, Covent Garden, Brent Cross and Bluewater shopping centres, Kings Cross Station and at the cupcake chain's flagship store in Mayfair for the next four weeks.

Does the idea of a Marmite-flavoured cupcake fill you with glee or horror? Would you try one? Let us know in the comments.
