Aprons at the ready, The Great British Bake Off returns to our screens for a new series, which starts tonight! The BBC TV cooking contest, which puts 12 amateur bakers to the test in a series of weekly baking challenges, looks set to be as exciting as ever. Tonight the contestants are being thrown in at the deep-end, tasked to make rum babas and a bake a show-stopping cake all under the watchful eyes of the king and queen of baking Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry, with presenters Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins providing comedic commentary and, often, a shoulder to cry on. We can't wait! To get you in the mood for all things baking, we've put together our top five Stylist.co.uk recipes for you to try out...

The Great British Bake Off is aired tonight on BBC 2 at 8pm

Cappuccino Pavlova

Created exclusively for Stylist by Nigella Lawson to celebrate her guest editor spot, this delicious Cappuccino Pavlova was the celebrity cook's first foray into making a fruit-free pavlova. Using espresso powder to give a bitter "oomph" to the sweet, marshmallow meringue, let's just say you'll never want a fruit pavlova again.

Banana Whoopie Pies

Part biscuit, part cake, the Whoopie Pie muscled its way into the UK baking scene from America last year. These Banana Whoopie Pies, created by A-list event planner Amy Atlas as part of a Chanel-inspired table spread, are a scrumptious way to use up overripe bananas, and definitely way more exciting than a banana loaf.

Chocolate Guinness Cake

Guinness in a chocolate cake?! It shouldn't work, but this Hummingbird Bakery recipe really really does. Like putting a shot of brandy in a Christmas cake, the Guinness helps to keep this rich chocolate sponge moist and delicious - plus the famous Irish stout adds a depth of flavour that's all its own.

Pistachio Cake with White Chocolate Frosting

Born in Bulgaria on the border of Turkey, top chef Silvena Rowe brings her Eastern Mediterranean influences into everything she cooks - including this amazing Pistachio Cake with White Chocolate Frosting. Mixing thick Greek yoghurt with a pinch of cardamom spice, this tasty cake will re-invigorate afternoon teas.

Fudgy Chocolate Brownies

Renowned for being supremely health-conscious, we were certainly surprised to see such a seriously indulgent chocolate fudge brownie recipe in Gwyneth Paltrow's cook book, Notes From My Kitchen Table. However, the Hollywood A-lister has managed the impossible: to give the brownie a healthy twist without losing out on all that delicious chocolate flavour.
