The most spectacular film and TV inspired cakes

Some cakes should be stared at for longer than it takes to eat them. Here are ten of them.

Each one of these creations have been inspired by our favourite films, television shows or books. From a pile of Harry Potter's Hogwarts textbooks to the Game of Thrones' Iron Throne, they perfectly replicate and re-imagine pop culture icons in sugar and sponge.

While we might not be brave enough to bake one of these ourselves, we can assure you, each one was edible...

Tim Burton's Corpse Bride cake

Tim Burton's dark and whimsical films such as Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Sleepy Hollow offer mounds of visual inspiration. This cake baker went above and beyond to capture the film-maker's aesthetic with a cake topped with the Corpse Bride wand Victor Van Dort.

Harry Potter cake

If you're still waiting for your letter to Hogwarts, you'll appreciate this detailed pile of magic books. It just so happens this cake was baked by TIER Luxury Cakes in Georgia, USA, for a college banquet. Now, if only we could remember the spell to conjure it...

Game of Thrones cake

Surprisingly, this gory cake isn't made by a professional baker. Redditor jeffois posted this image of an Iron Throne cake made by a friend. The throne was hand-made out of swizzle-stick swords and the blood was made from red icing.

Up cake

Hotel Mulia in Jakarta, Indonesia, created this cake for a couple's Up-inspired wedding. It's adorned with mini macaroons and a floating house cake topper.

Friends cake

A woman requested this Friends-inspired cake for her bridal shower because she and her husband-to-be are huge fans of the comedy show. Baker Kmays Keyks perfectly captured the iconic brown Central Perk sofa.

Kill Bill cake

Cake artist Barbarann Garrard at Cake Rhapsody bakery in Washington has been baking detailed cakes, particularly gothic ones since summer 2009. This homage to Kill Bill was made for her 9-year-old daughter's birthday party. The bottom represents "the bride" with white bridal lace and chocolate bullets, the next tier is a Japanese pagoda to represent the scene toward the end where Beatrice fights the Crazy 88's and O-Ren Ishii with edible roof tiles, and the top tier is yellow and black to depict Beatrice's suit wears. It's finished off with an edible piece of notebook paper made of fondant and a non-edible katana as a keepsake.

Alice in Wonderland's The Red Queen cake

Cake and chocolate artist Karen Portaleo has carved out a career in stunning sponges. Though she's had no formal culinary training, she's the lead decorator at Highland Bakery in Atlanta, Georgia, and whisks up jaw-dropping creations such as this thoroughly detailed Red Queen.

Breaking Bad

The internet is filled with cupcakes topped with edible light-blue sweets and sponges secretly-filled with blue food colouring to replicate crystal meth created by Walter White in Breaking Bad. While we couldn't locate who baked this stunner - it was posted by Pinterest user Alicia Galaz - it's still a work of art to marvel at.

Vintage book cakes

The Public Collectors Tumblr is dedicated to sharing images of cultural artefacts and information that public libraries, museums and other institutions and archives either do not collect or do not make freely accessible. They shared this scan from 1974 book Wilton Yearbook of Cake Decorating, proving that incredible cakes aren't just a thing of the internet age.

Frozen cake

Celebrating the release of Disney animation Frozen, marketing company Feref commissioned this replica of the leading characters. Bakers used 70 eggs, 5kg of butter, 20kg of fondant, 12kg of Belgian chocolate and 25 hours of work to build Elsa, Anna, Olaf and reindeer Sven out of cake. It stood at four feet tall, three feet wide and weighed in excess of 60kg.
