Bristol

East Bristol Bakery, above, is up for a Good Food Award

Get in early to nab sell-out sourdoughs (deliciously chewy with a thick crust), gluten-free and vegan varieties. Opened six months ago by Alex Poulter and Nikki Harold who gave up careers in other fields to get up at the crack of dawn to bake, it’s already been nominated for a Good Food Award. Check out the website for a serious dose of #breadporn.

Brighton

This gem of a bakery features an open kitchen so be prepared for the mouth-watering aroma of freshly baked bread. Choose from an excellent selection of sourdoughs or get in early to secure one of the three dinky antique tables and choose from an array of delicious pies, cakes and pastries served on mismatched vintage china.

Nottingham

This new artisan bakery uses a purpose-built, stone-floored oven which mimics a wood-fired oven, creating a firm, cracking crust and a soft, fluffy interior for each and every loaf. Delivery only, or head to Totally Locally Market Melton Road on the first Saturday of each month to try their outstanding granary bread and mean brioche.

Cardiff

If you’re lucky enough to live or work within a mile of this micro-bakery housed in a Cardiff townhouse, sign up for a one or three month subscription to have delicious sourdoughs and Italian bread delivered weekly by bike. Plus you can also get delicious homemade jam for slathering on toast, or homemade soup for dunking.

Edinburgh

‘Andante’ is a musical term for ‘at a slower tempo’, which describes the slow and steady pace used to lovingly create loaves at this small but perfectly formed bakery. Their most popular bread, the chewy 30% Rye Sourdough, takes two days from prepping to finish, while the crusty baguettes take a whopping 40 hours.

Newcastle

Queues form at farmers markets across the north east for the Zen Baker’s homemade seasonal offerings that include spiced loaves, luxurious treacle bread (perfect for French toast) and their most popular load, Anadama. Based on an old recipe from Boston passed down through the baker’s family, it’s dark, sweet and flavoursome.

Birmingham

After competing on <Masterchef>, head baker Neil wanted get back to his roots and life-long obsession with baking so Lucky 13 was born. Supplying local cafes and businesses including Lewis's of Moseley, you can also order their moreish spiced fruit bread and sourdough chocolate breakfast knots direct from their Jewellery Quarter kitchen.

Manchester

Combining our two favourite things in the world – freshly baked bread and eclectic wines – this bakery-cum-restaurant serves outstanding sourdough and rustic Italian focaccia. Go with friends, nab a communal bench and share one of their famous Bakerie Boards; choose from meat, cheese, vegan or sea, all served with a basket of oven-fresh bread.

London

This small artisan bakery based in East Dulwich just off Peckham Rye Common is famous for its (aptly-named)signature Peckham Rye, a 20% rye flour sourdough judged to be London’s best loaf at the Real Bread Festival. Producing a boutique range of six loaves, you’ll find them in local cafes and at their weekly stall at Herne Hill Market.
