These are the 7 best-rated pizza restaurants in the UK

Dirty burgers, burritos and bento boxes might be the trendy takeaway foods of the moment, but sometimes all you want is a good, old-fashioned pizza. (It’s Beyoncé’s food of choice, after all.)

In honour of the International Day of Italian Pizza, we’ve scoured TripAdvisor for the UK’s most highly-rated restaurants serving up slices of the good stuff. The best part? They’re all eminently reasonably priced. So go forth: eat pizza.

7. Double Zero “00” Neapolitan Pizza, Manchester

You’ve never seen pizza toppings like the ones on offer at this pizza parlour in the trendy, well-heeled Manchester suburb of Chorlton, which is rated the seventh best in the UK on TripAdvisor. Seriously: just look at how loaded those sourdough bases are.

They’re only open from 6pm and you can’t book, but you can bring your own alcohol, which is always a bit of a treat.

6. Pizza Union Spitalfields, London

Coming in at number six in TripAdvisor’s pizza rankings is the east London branch of the small (but hugely popular) Pizza Union chain. They offer fire-baked Roman-style pizzas, characterised by a thin, crispy base, and the prices – starting at just £3.95 – are amazingly reasonable.

If you’re still hungry after your pizza, try the only dessert on the menu: the pizza-adjacent Classico, a “dough ring” with Nutella and marscapone.

5. Italian Pizza Connection, Bayswater, London

There are two Italian Pizza Connections in London, but it’s the Bayswater branch that clinches it in TripAdvisor’s rankings. An old-fashioned neighbourhood pizzeria, from outside it could be mistaken for a standard takeaway (you can even see the pizza in the window).

But the reviews are almost unanimously glowing, and Bayswater – lovely, posh, leafy Bayswater – is a wonderfully soothing place to escape the hustle and bustle of central London. Worth checking out.

4. Pizza Union Kings Cross, London

The Kings Cross branch of Pizza Union scores more highly on TripAdvisor than its sister restaurant in Spitalfields (number 6), but the ethos and menu are the same. It’s also open slightly later, closing at midnight seven days a week rather than 11pm.

3. Rudy’s Neapolitan Pizza, Manchester

The UK’s third-most popular pizza place is this independent pizzeria in Ancoats, Manchester’s ‘Little Italy’. They stick to traditional Neapolitan-style pizzas, which are cooked for just 60 seconds and stay soft, light and floppy rather than stodgy and crispy.

The menu is high-end Italian – the ancozzese pizza, for example, features chilli flakes, smoked mozzarella, Tuscan sausage and friarielli (wild broccoli) – but the prices, which peak at £8.80, are eminently reasonable. They don’t take bookings, so you’ll just have to fight the crowds for a table.

2. Homeslice Neal’s Yard, London

There are three Homeslice restaurants dotted around London, but by far the most popular on TripAdvisor is the buzzy branch in Neal’s Yard, Covent Garden. At £20 a pizza and £4 for a slice, they’re not the cheapest pizzas in the world, but you get what you pay for.

The whole pizzas come in at a whopping 20 inches, and the toppings – from wild venison with kale, onions and dukkah to aubergine, cauliflower cheese, spinach and harissa – are truly original. If you’re sharing (which probably makes sense), you can split two flavours across one pizza.

1. Paesano, Glasgow

It’s estimated that there are up to 100,000 people of Italian descent living in Scotland, with many able to trace their lineage back to the 19th century – so it’s not entirely surprising that a Glasgow pizza restaurant tops TripAdvisor’s UK rankings, with hundreds of salivating reviews singing its praises.

Paesano, just around the corner from Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art, is a decidedly hip place, with industrial-chic décor, a very Instagrammable light installation, and virtually nothing on the menu apart from Napoletana-style pizzas at uber-reasonable prices: the cheapest, the tomato sugo, is just £5. One to check out next time you’re in bonny Scotland.
