This Yorkshire bakery has created an entire range of unicorn bakes

Something about the last year or so seems to have everyone pining for the whimsical. In edible form, at least.

Bagels, toast, lattes and even cheese toasties, the internet has been awash with magical, multicoloured, pastel-hued rainbow creations – a trend dubbed ‘unicorn’ because, frankly, it’s frickin lovely.

Now one West Yorkshire baker has gone all-out, full-on unicorn with an entire range of bakes devoted to the mythical creature.

Ilkley-based Helen Mallik is the woman behind Popalicious Cake Pops, and tells stylist.co.uk that the designs came about after a huge spike in enquiries over the last few months.

“I was getting emails every couple of days, which seemed crazy,” she explains. “I've got two boys so some of the current trends pass me by a little, and I hadn't realised quite how big the unicorn trend was.

“The feedback I've been getting since launching the range has absolutely blown me away.

“I only released them this week and I hadn't realised how popular they would be, or how much attention they would attract in such a short time. I've had lots and lots of enquiries and some new exciting business proposals.”

Mallik has been flooded with orders since releasing the unicorn pops

The range includes unicorn-shaped cake pops, unicorn party pops and rainbow sprinkle pops.

Meanwhile, for those who prefer their magical baked goods sans stick, there are unicorn-themed gift boxes, rainbow cake pods and chocolate sprinkle cake pods (plus Mallik can make whole unicorn cakes to order if you so desire).

And not to worry if you don’t live in God’s own country (aka Yorkshire) – Mallik runs the business from home and doesn’t have a premises to visit, instead pops and pods can be ordered online and delivered nationwide.

The cake pods are a design unique to Popalicious

Mallik started Popalicious in 2012 and has seen a steady rise in business thanks to her cartoon creations.

Among other things, the baker has tackled well-known characters such as Shopkins (below), My Little Pony, Angry Birds, Wombles, BB8, The White RabbitThe Magic Roundabout’s Ermintrude and Catbus from Studio Ghibli, as well as various other creations including eggs with a ‘yolk’ in the middle.

She says: “The egg cake pops were a big hit, so I had this in mind when designing the unicorns and decided to make the cake inside rainbow colours.

“I do try to be a little different to other cake poppers, I like to push the boundaries with what's possible with the actual structure and design of the cake pop.

“You'll often find me in strange positions trying to get a complicated design of cake pop fully coated before it dries!”
