Heston Blumenthal's ice-cream obsession broke records over the weekend.

He's fused some of Britain's favourite savoury flavours with ice-cream (bacon and egg, mustard, meat pie) but now the zany chef has gone for substance over style with a one-tonne vanilla 99.

Cranes and a fork-lift truck were needed to erect the four-metre dessert in Gloucester Park, where hundreds of ice-cream lovers and curious passers-by gathered to watch as workers shot strawberry sauce onto the giant Mr. Whippy using "laser-guided canons".

Even Adam Man Vs. Food Richman would cower from this 6,666 scoop food challenge, which also came with a Flake and sprinkles

The humungous Mr. Whippy, which had been frozen for a month before the big day, smashed the previous record for the world's largest ice-cream by 2.5 metres.

Despite it's simple vanilla flavouring, Dave Baker, project manager at ice-cream manufacturer Walls told The Gloucester Citizen that the exact ingredients of Blumenthal's creation were "a closely guarded secret".

Heston admitted, "We were a bit worried about the seagulls so we covered the cone with a white tarpaulin cover." Phew.
