Scented candles capture the smell of divorce

We've heard of scented candles in flavours as varied as blush suede and green tomato, but a new US company is selling candles with smells ranging from The Friend Zone, Surprise Baby and even Freshly Signed Divorce Papers.

Flicking Candles, founded this year, has its tounge firmly in its cheek, stating on its website "we at the Flicking Candle Company have burned through every candle imaginable. We’re tired of country apple, summer sand castle, and fresh sheets."

So if you don't believe in the power of peony or pink sands to enhance your living space, these scented candles with a twist might be ideal for those with a more cynical perspective.

There are currently fourteen candles available, with smells from Cancelled Vacation - "it stinks to have a planned vacation suddenly ripped away from you and cancelled. Let us help you air out that attitude with our sweet smelling Cancelled Vacation candle" - to Defriend - "Nothing makes a bolder statement than getting defriended. Our candle captures that sweet smell of attempting to stalk someone’s profile, only to find that you no longer have access to their pictures." Several, including Blueberry Bromance, and Surprise Baby Powder, have already sold out.

The candles are made of 100% soy, and scented with "unique fragrances" to "celebrate all of life’s moments and accomplishments". The makers say that they are candle enthusiasts, so even if Coffee Cram Session doesn't sound like the most cheering of scents, they insist that they are "more than just a novelty item - our candles are crafted of the highest quality."

With their light hearted outlook on life, these candles may well be the perfect present for that mythical friend who's got everything. As the Flicking Candles website states, they work more effectively than a card for a friend who's going through a hard time. "There is no better way to subtly acknowledge their personal setbacks than with a candle that illuminates those challenges and puts them on display for everyone to see. They’ll be happy to own a fragrance that truly captures life and all its disappointments."

It may be best left up to personal judgement of whether your friends want their setbacks put on display, but there's no denying they would make a hilarious alternative to an expensive scented candle.
