The mental health benefits of spending time with animals has been well documented, and playing with puppies in particular is proven to help us de-stress.

With this in mind, it seems timely to report on science's latest groundbreaking discovery: the world's first pair of identical twin puppies has been born and, in case you're having a bad day, you can take a look at the adorable pups below.

The male wolfhound puppies, who were born in South Africa earlier this year, were confirmed as the world's first known identical puppies by scientists at the University of Pretoria. The identical twins were born sharing a placenta.

"There have been rumours about twins in dogs before," Carolynne Joone, one of the reproductive specialists who tested the puppies on their likeness, told the BBC

"The twins looked very similar," she continued. "But pups from the same litter often do, [and] there were small differences in the white markings on their paws, chests and the tips of their tails. I wasn't sure they were monozygotic [identical] at all initially."

However, Joone, along with a research team, was able to conclude that the puppies were identical. Their findings are now published in the journal Reproduction in Domestic Animals.

"We just happened to be lucky enough to be able to confirm it genetically," she added.
