“I am done with boys”: seven-year-old's story of unrequited love goes viral

Having a secret diary was a rite of passage for most of us when we were young.

Whether you wrote in a journal kept under lock and key or typed into a digital version protected by password (who could ever forget the joys of the bright pink plastic My Secret Diary?), your diary was the place to vent your top secret thoughts on boys, your friends and all the embarrassing things your parents did.

And in a story we can all relate to, a teenager has shared a series of diary entries she wrote when she was seven years old, chronicling her unrequited love for a boy called Riley.

Madie Cardon, a now 16-year-old from Utah, shared the painstakingly written diary pages on Twitter after stumbling across her old journal while cleaning.

"I don't think I can do this anymore," she declares in the first entry, before describing how she saw her school crush, Riley, chasing another girl, called Jessica, in the playground.

"She is such a player! She hugs at least five boys every day! I am so mad of her," she writes of Jessica, before devising a genius plan to get her revenge.

"I think I will tell Riley her secret. She wears pull ups! After he finds out he won't like her anymore."

Sadly, the plan doesn't appear to work, with the next diary entry chronicling a truly heartbreaking Valentine's Day.

"My depression is getting strong," Madie writes, before describing how she had stayed up "all night" to make Riley a Valentine.

"I wrote anonymous on it so he didn't know it was me. Right when he looked at it he threw it away. I am still crying."

And this story isn't one with a happy ending: in the final diary installment, Madie receives some devastating news.

"Worst day ever," she writes. "Riley told me he likes Jessica."

"I am done with boys."

Luckily, Madie is no longer crying about Riley, although her plight has struck a chord with social media users, with over 21,000 people sharing her story so far on Twitter.

"I don't remember writing about it, but I do remember everything that happened in it," Madie told BuzzFeed.

She has even reached out to Jessica to reconnect, so the story might have a happy ending after all...
