#ShePersisted: viral hashtag celebrates the badass women from history

Sometimes, Twitter can be a brilliant place.

For proof, look no further than the hashtag #ShePersisted, currently trending worldwide as thousands of people across the globe take to social media in a mass outcry of yet another example of casual sexism.

The example in point took place last Tuesday, when Massachusetts Democrat Elizabeth Warren was silenced during the Senate by majority leader Mitch McConnell.

Warren had been reading aloud a letter written in 1986 by Coretta Scott King, in which she criticised Senator Jeff Sessions, but she was abruptly halted and banned from the floor as the letter apparently broke a decree stating Senators could not call other Senators into question.

A defiant Warren has since taken to Twitter to promise that this is “just the beginning”.

After silencing Warren, McConnell said, “She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.”

These now-immortal words sparked outrage with feminists the world over, who instantly took to social media to share their support of Warren with images and quotes from women who refused to be silenced.

You can see some of the best examples below and follow the hashtag on Twitter here
