“Opening the gates of hell”: social media erupts over terrifying sorority video

Here in the UK, we’ve always been a little sceptical about the American ‘Greek system’ of sororities and fraternities.

It’s a tradition that champions elitism, out-dated gender roles and whiteness, in which impressionable young men and women queue up to ‘pledge’ and dedicate their entire university careers to a group.

One of the many traditions that cults sororities practice is door-stacking – and the latest one has sent the internet into meltdown.

Door-stacking, also known as door songs, is a sorority tradition in which new pledges pose in a pyramid or stack behind the double doorways of their sorority house, dressed in identical clothes and preened to the nines. When the doors are opened by the sorority president, the pledges sing a welcome chant, complete with clapping and head movements, to senior sorority sisters or visitors.

There are streams of the videos on YouTube, but the latest sees the sisters of Alpha Delta Pi – a sorority at the University of Texas – and has since gone viral, after Twitter users described it as the “gates of hell”.

The video, created to recruit new members, sees the three sorority presidents chant in unison at viewers, telling them “we’ve been waiting for you all summer and we’re so glad you’re finally here,” before opening the double doors to reveal around 50 screaming sorority sisters, all waving their hands bobbing their disembodied heads.

The group then begin their manic recruitment chant in syncronicity as they continue clapping, cheering and beckoning people in.

One Twitter user posted the video with the caption "They really did just open the gates of hell", in a tweet that has since been retweeted over 40,000 times and liked over 78,000 by users who are terrified, bemused and tickled by the video.

Sorority stacking has been banned by some universities for safety reasons, as apparently girls were suffering from concussions and injuries trying to get into formation behind the closed doors, clambering over one another in haste.

But the focus of the criticism was the lack of the diversity in the sorority, which has since been mocked heavily on social media.

Sara Kennedy, manager of communications for the University of Texas, told BuzzFeed News that sororities and fraternities are not an official representation of the university, and that the school was dedicated to improving diversity, saying:

“All our staff are directly and actively engaged in promoting and creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.”

The video that has sadly since been deleted from the Alpha Delta Pi Instagram, but Twitter users are continuing to share it.
