Smile power: the 10 most shared emojis of 2015 show Twitter folk are a happy and positive bunch

Twitter users, it turns out, are by and large a happy bunch.

Or else, people who use emoticons are.

The service has revealed the 10 most used emojis of 2015 and happily there's not a sadface or skull in sight.

The most popular symbol among Twitter's 320 million users, including 15 million in the UK, has been used a whopping 6.6 billion times over the past 12 months (see the full list below).

It's safe to say that 2015 is the year of the emoji. From endless updates to studies on who uses them and why, the colourful, cartoonish symbols are big news.

In May, emoji was declared the UK's fastest-growing language and Sony snapped up the film rights for an emoji movie in July. Last month the Oxford English Dictionary, that dignified, reliable bastion of language, declared its word of the year to be the cry laughing face.

In reverse order, these are 2015's top 10 emoji on Twitter:

10. Fire - To describe something or someone hot

9. Clapping hands sign - Well done!

8. Blowing a kiss - platonic smooch, no tongues

4. Blushing smile - Happy, also kind of tocuhed/embarrassed

3. Heart eyes - I'm looking, I'm liking

2. Crying hard - Ok, so the second most popular emoji is technically sad, but IRL it's often used alongside the cry-laugh face...

1. Tears of joy - Twitter's most popular emoticon of 2015. Used 6.6 billion times - almost as many times in the past 12 months as there are people on the planet

Of course, the eye roll was introduced too late in the year to be in with a chance.
