The best ever first kisses on TV

Much to our chagrin, real-life isn't like TV. We don't have undiscovered superpowers, can't (and won't, don't worry, mum) make illegal drugs to make our millions from, and we don't have the inside scoop on any political scandals, with which to benefit our own career.

As for romance, we've never experienced the sort of angst that regularly accompanies most on-screen storylines , but we'd be the first to admit that we get hooked on TV relationships because of the will-they-won't-they element. And you'd have to admit there's nothing quite like seeing the couple you were rooting for all along, finally get it together.

With that in mind, we've selected some of the best small screen smooches ever. Spoiler: after watching, all your real kisses from now on will be ruined.

Dawson's Creek: Joey and Pacey

After Joey was done with the over-talking and whiney nature of Dawson, she fell in love with Pacey (well, wouldn't you?). While die-hard fans of the show would argue that this isn't their actual first kiss, we'd argue this was their first real kiss.

The OC: Seth and Summer

Although Summer still wasn't convinced of her feelings for Seth here, it was the first time the pair locked lips. They went on to become on of our favourite couples - no one quite ever matched their banter.

New Girl: Nick and Jess

We knew it was coming, we just weren't sure when it was going to happen. But after a game of True American (a completely fictional, and utterly confusing, drinking game), Nick and Jess are told they have to go kiss while being locked in a room, and then show the other players proof. Nick finds it far too stressful and ends up teetering on the ledge of their apartment building, such is his desire not to kiss Miss Day. However, later on, he decides to go for it. Warning: you may swoon after watching the clip below.

Gossip Girl: Chuck and Blair

Quite possibly one of the sexiest first kisses in TV history, Blair and Chuck get down to business after she performs a risqué dance at Chuck's recently acquired burlesque club, Victoria.

Friends: Ross and Rachel

The one we'd all been waiting for. For nearly two whole seasons we had to watch the ultimate will-they-won't-they couple nearly get it together. But, after Rachel gets drunk and tells Ross how she really feels, it finally happens. The kiss itself was the stuff of legend, and we still hold out hope that someone will kiss us like that.

Scandal: Olivia and Fitz

Before Fitz was in the White House, Olivia and the future president made out (and a little bit more) on his campaign trail. All of which was captured on a recording device. The most political first kiss ever.

Gossip Girl: Dan and Serena

While Dan and Serena weren't quite as hot as 'Chair', their romance was always the one we were rooting for. Luckily, they eventually made it (sorry, spoiler for anyone who hasn't watched the final of Gossip Girl) but we knew it from the moment they had their first kiss.

Sherlock: Molly and Sherlock

Poor Molly. Sherlock was pretty mean to her all those Christmases ago (in A Scandal In Belgravia). Then again, she did help him fool the world into believing he was dead. And, as revealed in the first episode of series three, The Empty Hearse, Sherlock plants one on Molly as he smashes through a window in his bid to fool everyone he's plummeted to the ground below. We reckon she's forgiven him for being such an arse.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Buffy and Angel

The most doomed relationship in the history of TV ever? Quite possibly. Initially when Buffy meets Angel, she has no idea who, or what, he is. Then, they kiss and she discovers rather quickly that he's actually a vampire. Not the best outcome after a bit of pashing.

Neighbours: Scott and Charlene

Oh how we loved Scott and Charlene. They were so innocent and sweet and this kiss just says it all.

True Blood: Eric and Sookie

Bill who? That's what we imagine Sookie thought after kissing Eric Northman, played by Alexander Skarsgård. They have a complicated relationship but we can't be the only ones who hope they end up together? (Yes, we've all watched him "die" but apparently he's returning to the show).

Doctor Who: The Doctor and River Song

This is a slightly confusing one, as it's the Doctor's first kiss with River but it's actually the last one that River has with the Doctor (they're in opposite timelines, work with us here).

The Big Bang Theory: Sheldon and Amy

Fans of The Big Bang Theory will probably never have expected 'Shamy' to snog. Ever. That's mainly because Sheldon doesn't like kissing or touching, or anything very human for that matter, which is why this is such a great moment. The setting is on a train, which Amy had booked for the two of them for Valentine's day, and after they have an argument, Sheldon decides to finally to go for it. Shocked faces all around.

The Vampire Diaries: Damon and Elena

It's never a great idea to give your brother's girlfriend a smacker. Especially if she's human and you're both vampires. Not that we'd be complaining if were kissed by someone who looked like Damon.

Grey's Anatomy: Alex and Izzie

Alex and Izzie have a complicated relationship (yes, it's a common theme) and although they take their time getting together (another common theme), when they do it's pretty spectacular.
