The bedtime routines successful people follow before they go to sleep

When it comes to formulating a recipe for success, we often forget one of the most important things: our bedtime routine.

What we do before we go to sleep has a knock-on effect on both our mood and energy levels for the next day, so it's important to use this time wisely.

While we already know about the morning routines of successful career women, from Victoria Beckham drinking a double espresso to Anya Hindmarch hitting the gym, Business Insider has now revealed the 11 nighttime routines favoured by successful people. 

We've selected our three favourite tips below to help you transform your pre-bedtime routine from a Netflix-binge to a productive and restful activity, that will have you waking up ready and raring to go.


1. Go for an evening walk

Science has already proved that walking is a great form of exercise, with health benefits including a reduction in cholesterol and a boost to your self esteem.

And a study by the National Sleep Foundation found that exercise, even at nighttime, can aid a restful night of sleep. 

Joel Gascoigne, cofounder and CEO of social media tool Buffer, recommends a pre-bedtime stroll to process your thoughts and draw a line under the day. He said, "This is a wind down period, and allows me to evaluate the day’s work, think about the greater challenges, gradually stop thinking about work, and reach a state of tiredness."


2. Read something

Reading is a favoured pre-sleep past time of many of the world's most successful people, from Barack Obama to Bill Gates.

And you don't have to lug a heavyweight tome between the sheets to reap the benefits.

International business speaker and author Michael Kerr said, "This isn't necessarily reserved just for business reading or inspirational reading. Many successful people find value in being browsers of information from a variety of sources, believing it helps fuel greater creativity and passion in their lives."


3. Make a to-do list

If you've ever found yourself running over a to-do list in your head in the early hours of the morning, you will know the importance of going to sleep with a clear agenda for the next day.

One way of ensuring your thoughts don't keep you awake is to jot down a list of everything you want to achieve the next day before you go to sleep. Keep a small notebook and pen by your bed and take a few minutes to process your thoughts before you hit the hay.

Michael Kerr said, "Clearing the mind for a good night sleep is critical for a lot of successful people. Often they will take this time to write down a list of any unattended items to address the following day, so these thoughts don't end up invading their head space during the night."
