Twin sisters celebrate 100th birthday with absolutely fabulous photo shoot

100 year old twins.JPG

Poet Kamand Kojouri famously said that “twins are two bodies that dance to each other’s joy [...] two separate beings conjoined at the heart” and we don’t doubt that to be true. For all us non-twins, we imagine it’s being born with a ready-made best friend.

For the past century, Brazilian twin sisters Maria Pignaton Pontin and Paulina Pignaton Pandolf have celebrated their big milestones together – so it makes sense that their 100th birthday is the perfect time to commemorate their bond.

Enter photographer Camila Lima, with a very special project in mind.

After spotting a story about the twins in the local news, Lima approached them to see if they would be interested in starring together in a photo shoot (which she offered to them for free as a birthday gift).

“I am in love with the elderly and for about a year I have been developing photos with the elderly,” Lima explained to Fox News. “I photograph many young  couples, so my love for photographing older couples is a way to inspire younger couples.”

Maria and Paulina were over the moon to be offered the gift of a photo shoot, and it wasn’t long before they were decked out in amazing tutu skirts, floral crowns and matching ‘100’ t-shirts.

Lima snapped the twins driving around their hometown of of Ibiraçu, Brazil, in a bright pink car, enjoying a birthday picnic in the sun, and, most importantly of all, sharing some quality BFF time with one another.

The photo shoot took an estimated two hours, which included a lot of fun with hair styling, make-up, and dressing up.

Speaking to Good Housekeeping, Lima said: “They did everything I asked and did not complain about tiredness.”

She added that the sisters were both “very happy and satisfied” with the gorgeous photographs.

The twins aren’t just celebrating with a photo shoot, however: Maria and Paulina are also hosting a big family party. And when we say big, we mean big.

According to Lima, Paulina has six children, 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Maria has five children, 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, just some of the 100 people who intend to gather around and watch the twins blow out the candles on their cake.

While they have a lot to look back on, the twins revealed that the thing they’re most grateful in life for is one another.

As such, they have just one birthday wish.

Speaking to Gazeta Online, Maria revealed: “I wish for much happiness, and many more years of life [with my sister].”

No, we’re not crying: we just have something in our eye…
