“It is me, looking just like you”: Twitter users share what #mydepressionlookslike

As a society, we’re gradually becoming more aware of the importance of mental health, and the value of talking about it openly. But as we’ve explored before at Stylist, one of the scariest things about mental health issues is how incomprehensible they can seem to those on the outside.

For people coping with depression, anxiety, OCD, or other disorders, this gulf in understanding – the sense that most people don’t ‘get it’ – can be incredibly isolating.

All of which makes the Twitter hashtag #mydepressionlookslike so important. Over the weekend, as Mental Health Awareness Week drew to a close, Twitter users shared their experiences of the disorder. From highlighting common misconceptions (“#mydepressionlookslike not being able to get out of bed due to emotional exhaustion some days while outsiders think you're just simply lazy”) to explaining how depression actually feels (“#mydepressionlookslike wanting/needing to be alone for days on end but feeling indescribably lonely even if somebody actually shows up”), the tweets make for vital reading.
