“It’s time to leave our vaginas the hell alone”: Call the Midwife’s Samantha Baines has her say

Samantha Baines is an award-winning actor, comedian, and radio presenter – yet, like so many other women, she constantly finds herself thrust unwittingly under the misogynist glare of the media. Her talents are brushed aside in favour of conversations about her clothes, her hair, her weight, and her make-up – but she’s always done her best to rise above that pervasive toxicity.

Until now, that is.

Stylist recently went below the belt to investigate the rise of vaginal beautification – and discovered that, as well as hair removal and douching, women are now being encouraged to spend money on vagina facials (aka ‘vajacials’), labia lipsticks, and cosmetic surgery.

“It’s symptomatic of a patriarchal culture that feels the need to control and sanitise female sexuality,” fumes writer Alexandra Jones – and Baines, in a fiery new video, whole-heartedly agrees.

“Can’t we just leave this one bit of our bodies alone?” she asks.

Baines, warming to her theme, continues: “Vaginas are like weeds – we’ve been told they are ugly and bad, but weeds are pretty self-sufficient. They grow and flower all on their own, they don’t need pruning or watering.”

She adds: “Did you know our vaginas are actually self-cleaning? Like cats. Which gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘pussy’.”

Check it out:

Baines goes on to remind us that our vaginas are our own, and that they deserve a world free from media scrutiny, expectations, and beauty treatments.

“These things are for us, and yes the people we choose to share them with, but mainly for us,” she says. “They give us pleasure and create life.

“Surely that is one thing that can remain sacred?”
