A video that shows an antelope charging at full-speed into a mountain biker has taken YouTube by storm, attracting over 2 million hits.

In the fist-in-mouth footage, South African cyclist Evan van der Spuy is seen flying through the air after the red hartebeest appears out of nowhere in the middle of the African bush.

His friend and fellow cyclist Travis Walker, who filmed the entire sequence, is heard shouting "watch the buck" just seconds before the galloping beast takes van der Spuy out.

He is then heard shouting, "Woah! Holy cow! S**t! Are you ok dude?" as his friend lies groaning on the ground.

Both men were taking part in a mountain bike race at Albert Falls Dam at the time of the incident.

Van der Spuy, 17, was apparently hospitalised for a short time but he is now OK - though probably less pleased that his unfortunate run-in has become a YouTube phenomenon, with slow-motion sequences highlighting the collision to maximum effect.

YouTube users, however, couldn't hide their delight - or their ability to put a pun on the situation.

"Sorry, my buck is a little hard of hearing.. he thought you said "buck right ear" instead of "the buck stops here!" one wrote, as another added, "That looked like a perfect tackle!"

Watch the video in all its painful entirety, below (and be warned - the footage contains some strong language).
