Woman opens up about having her grandmother as her bridesmaid: “She’s my best friend”

Questionable dresses and expensive hen parties aside, it’s always a moving moment when your best friend sits you down and asks you to be their bridesmaid.

And, for May Smith, it was no different; she was over the moon to take part in Amanda Scott’s nuptials – and she even downed celebratory shots in a party bus with the rest of her wedding party.

However, while the other bridesmaids knocked back tequila, May opted for teeny-weeny glasses of chilled white wine. Because, at 92 years old, the Canadian granny just isn’t worried about following the status quo.

Scott and her grandmother, both of whom live in Canada, have an incredibly strong relationship. So, when it came to her wedding, the bride wasted no time in subverting tradition and asking Smith to be her bridesmaid.

“She cried and said she would love to. And basically, for the whole next year, she told everybody that she came in contact with that she was going to be a bridesmaid in July.

“She’d say, ‘You ever hear of a 92-year-old bridesmaid?’” Scott told CTV News.

On the big day, Smith donned a pair of cowboy boots (just like the other bridesmaids), stuck a blue bow in her hair to match the denim theme, and posed for photographs with the rest of the wedding party.

And Scott, who visits her grandmother every week without fail for dinner and a natter, says that Smith fulfilled her role as bridesmaid (or should that be bridesmatriarch?) with aplomb.

"Out of everyone, she was the best of my bridesmaids,” she said. “She’s done it a billion times, maybe that’s why.”

Scott added that her grandmother is a remarkable person – and that she wanted her non-traditional wedding party to reflect the strong bond she shares with the older woman.

“She’s my best friend. I tell her everything,” she said.

“She really is just my inspiration, and she’s one of the best people I’ve ever met. I want to be just like her.”
