Manchester’s cult ‘cupcakery’ Hey Little Cupcake is reaching out to health-conscious cake addicts with a collection of savoury cupcakes, available throughout Lent.

With flavours including Mexican-inspired Nacho Cheese , Cheesy Marmite and Eggs & Bacon, the savoury cupcakes are for adventurous foodies only – but could be a tasty alternative to those who find the bite-sized treats too sickly sweet.

As we recently reported, the cult of the cupcake shows no signs of abating, with 700 million sold last year in the US alone. But will this baking trend catch on, and give the queen of all baked goods a new lease of life?

Sarah Wilson, Hey Little Cupcake owner said: “We’ve been working on these recipes for weeks and felt Lent was the perfect time to launch them to the public. The collection is our most creative and adventurous yet and we hope it will be a big hit for all customers that crave more of a savoury treat.”

We haven't tasted them yet (but will be soon, in the name of research), but imagine the cupcake is much like a lighter, fluffier version of a muffin. We’re particularly intrigued by the “Blumenthal-esque” bacon and eggs flavour, which has been touted as the “perfect British Hangover cure”.

The Savoury Collection is available in store on Little Quay Street in Spinningfields from today until the end of Lent (5th April), priced at £2.50 per cupcake.
