"Slowly, silently, now the moon / Walks the night in her silver shoon" - Walter John de la Mare

If you happened to glance up at the evening sky last night, you might have chanced across the sight of the supermoon - the biggest and closest full moon of 2014. Sunday night's spectacular lunar showing appeared larger than anything in decades and scientists have predicted that there will not be a closer full moon until November, 2034.

Last night's moon orbited around 863 miles closer to Earth than it has in the past 20 years. It also turned full during the same hour as the perigee (its closest point to earth) making it "an extra-super moon" according to Nasa Science News.

But if you missed this phenomenal sight last night, fear not. From Hawaii to Greece and China, a host of people around the world were poised to capture the incredible vision on camera. The supermoon in all its glory was pictured hovering above Tower Bridge in London, in a silhouette against the Statue of Liberty in New York and against the shadow of an aeroplane approaching Los Angeles International Airport.

Come take a look at the most breathtaking images of last night below, and stay tuned for the last supermoon to appear on 9 September.
