8 reasons why Rae Earl is our new TV heroine


If you haven't been watching My Mad Fat Diary, we insist you do that now. In fact, before you read on, go and watch the first series and then come back. Got that? Good.

So, seeing as you've devoured the whole of the first series, you'll be pleased to know that the new season has already started! But if you need a little more persuading, here's why you should watch our favourite new TV show, and bow down to the woman that is Rae Earl.

1. Her music taste

She loves Oasis and even impresses the boys in her new group of mates when she picks the Beastie Boys' Sabotage to play on the jukebox in the pub. Plus, the moment when she sings along to the Spice Girls with her mum makes us wish it was 1996 all over again.

2. She can laugh at herself

In series one, she goes to a pool party and manages to get stuck in a slide but, instead of feeling embarrassed, she pokes fun at herself by asking Chop to help get her "fat ass" out of the slide.

3. She's open about sex (well, at least to herself)

She's honest about the fact that she loves boys and is desperate to lose her virginity. This is a refreshing change to characters who feel they have to hide their sexual feelings.

4. She knows how to make other people laugh too

We all know women can be as funny as men but Rae is particularly amusing. From her eye rolls at her mother to being rude to the next door neighbour, she's pretty darn hilarious.

5. A great friend

Despite the fact she has a ticket to see Oasis at Knebworth, she decides to ditch the boys in favour of looking after her friend Chloe who has just had an abortion.

6. Can keep a secret

When her mate Archie tells her he's gay, she's great at keeping schtum. Also, see above.

7. She has embarrassing period moments

We've all been there, it's just great to finally see it on screen. Oh, and also the fact that Finn defends her honour (swoon).

8. Her love of leather jackets and Converse

We're still rocking this look too.
