Prince William issues statement about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s relationship

Prince William defends Prince Harry's relationship with Meghan Markle

Just a few weeks ago, Prince Harry – in an unprecedented move – released a public statement condemning some of the media’s sexist and racist treatment of his new girlfriend, Meghan Markle.

Since then, some of the same tabloids have claimed that Harry’s older brother, Prince William, believed that he had “made a mistake in confirming the relationship” – and baselessly speculated that William thought his brother had been too “emotional” in speaking out to defend his 35-year-old girlfriend.

Kensington Palace have now issued a statement at Prince William’s specific request to say that this could not be further from the truth.

Released to The Telegraph, the statement simply reads: “The Duke of Cambridge absolutely understands the situation concerning privacy and supports the need for Prince Harry to support those closest to him.”

The publication also spoke with a source close to the royal family, who explained that Harry, 32, shares the same media insiders as his 34-year-old brother.

As such, both brothers are consulted on anything which affects them both – and there would have been absolutely no way that Harry would put out a statement which William disapproved of.

The source told them: “They [the brothers] don’t issue statements like that without talking to each other, and they talked about the Meghan Markle statement extensively in advance of it being put out.

“The Duke was as alarmed as anyone about what was happening with Meghan.

“No-one wanted to have to put that statement out, including Prince Harry, and there was concern about confirming the relationship.

“But over the course of one weekend things escalated to the extent that Prince Harry felt he had to act.”

Markle recently penned a new essay for Elle UK, in which she opened up about the difficulties of reconciling her philanthropic pursuits with her Hollywood fame.

The acclaimed actor, philanthropist and feminist campaigner explained that it can be “challenging” to experience both simultaneously, particularly if you want to remain true to your heart – and grounded in reality.

However she, much like Prince Harry, often uses her time in the spotlight to draw attention to important world issues, and takes her position as a role model very seriously indeed.

“With fame comes opportunity, but it also includes responsibility – to advocate and share, to focus less on glass slippers and more on pushing through glass ceilings,” she wrote. “And, if I'm lucky enough, to inspire.”

The original statement from Prince Harry, which was released in early November via the official Twitter account for Kensington Palace, read: “Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle's safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her.

“It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is 'the price she has to pay' and that 'this is all part of the game'. He strongly disagrees. This is not a game – it is her life and his.”

While Markle has not addressed the situation herself, the Suits actor recently tweeted her friends and fans for their recent show of support.

“Sending extra love to Emily, Sol, Domi, Hannah, Sih, Doris, Jessy Scarlett and all of you who have been so supportive. I've missed you guys,” she wrote.
