Shutting out the slut shamers: this is the best response for dealing with online abuse

What were you wearing when you got attacked? Do you think that shirt might have been a little short? Oh, but please don’t wear your hijab…

It’s like trying to navigate a minefield, dealing with the patriarchal ‘rules’ of what women should wear – just appropriate enough to be decent, but not too hidden.

 Star of comedy show, Modern Family, Ariel Winter has had enough.

The 17-year-old called out Instagram trolls in the best way, after an image she posted of herself on a boat wearing a bikini, alongside her two nieces, was met with a flurry of abuse, including comments suggesting she was ‘asking for it’ and other vile misogynistic slews.

Because, what was she thinking wearing swimwear by the sea?

Winter responded to the trolls by posting an image of a pair of women’s legs hitching up a skirt (originally designed by artist, Rosea Lake in 2013, and entitled, Judgements).

The legs in the image are marked at varying intervals, to represent skirt lengths, with the highest, at the top of the thigh, marked ‘slut’, followed by ‘asking for it’ until the marks reach below the knee and the words change to ‘proper’. On the calf, the word ‘prudish’ appears, to reveal the double-standards women are faced with.

The actor captioned the photograph, saying:

“Who knew that an innocent photo with my nieces would turn into this? The height of a girl’s skirt or whatever she is wearing for that matter, does not imply what she is asking for.”

The caption continues, saying:

“I typically never give power to the mean things people bravely say behind their computer screens on the Internet, but this is for the girls who are constantly bullied whether it be online or at school.

“You are not asking for anything because of what you are wearing- you are expressing yourself and don’t you ever think you deserve the negativity as the consequence to what you are wearing- YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL.

“Us girls have to stick together!!!!!!” (sic) she says.

The image now has 44.1k likes.
