Alicia Silverstone to star in new TV show about 1970s feminism

Oh my god, we’re totally buggin’. In today’s exciting TV news, Alicia Silverstone is set to return to our screens in a brand new show – and it’s all about feminism.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Silverstone has been signed up to star in American Woman, a new TV Land series set in the 1970s amid the sexual revolution and the second wave of feminism.

The comedy, which has been penned by one of the writers behind 30 Rock, follows the story of Bonnie Nolan (Silverstone), a mother of two daughters who decides to leave her unhappy marriage. In a society where divorce is still widely frowned upon, Bonnie finds herself faced with the daunting task of trying to gain independence as a single woman.

Silverstone might always be Cher Horowitz to us, but the 39-year-old actress and animal rights activist has worked steadily in film, TV and theatre since starring in Clueless in 1995, from a role in sitcom Suburgatory to performing on Broadway alongside Laura Linney.

American Woman is based on the childhood experiences of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kyle Richards – a child actor in ’70s shows including Little House on the Prairie – and is currently pegged to air in 2017. We already can’t wait.
