The World Photography Awards has just launched its call for 2015's entries - and we've picked our favourites from last year's competition.

2014's contest included remarkable wildlife shots, intimate moments between families as well as epic landscapes and urban cityscapes.

Some of the most stunning images were selected to be exhibited at Somerset House this year in May and included the overall winner - a series of photographs of wet dogs.

The photographer Sophie Gamand took the pictures of wet dogs while they were being washed at a grooming parlor.

Each pup appears to be pulling a strange face as they're mid-clean, proving that dogs really don't enjoy their bath times.

Other shots include women with masks on their faces in Turkey, looking at police firing tear gas, a lion playing with a cat, and a nearly naked woman jumping into a lake, all of which you can see below.

The World Photography Awards were launched in 2008, and budding photographers as well as professional snappers from across the world can enter their pictures for free in a variety of different categories.

Photographers compete for a range of cash prizes and the latest cutting edge digital imaging equipment from Sony.

The overall winners will be announced at a gala ceremony held in London on 23 April 2015.

See worldphoto.org for more details.

Photographer: Denis Dailleux; Mother and son Mahmoud and his mother; Series Description: A most Christ-like image, a bare-chested son rests near his mother. Why does this image of the mother-son relationship move us so? Because the son, by his nudity, looks as fragile as he was on the day of his birth? Because the mother seems fulfilled by the presence of son, who completes her? These images from our Mediterranean roots strike us because they come the dawn of time, and the same time, rest at the heart of the modern psyche.

Photographer: Michael Nichols; Series Name: The Short Happy Life of a Serengeti Lion.

Photographer : Alpay Erdem; A muddy face from the mud bath going into the lake

Photographer: Chin Boon Len; A baby Orang Utan peeking out from his mother's embrace.

Photographer: Mateusz Baj; The inhabitant of Szack of Ukraine and her horse

Photographer: Mario Wezel; Series Name: One in eight hundred; Series Description: Emmy is five years old. With her parents Martin and Karina and her younger brother Kristian, she lives in the countryside close to Aarhus, in the middle of Denmark. For half a year she has been attending the local kindergarten now. Her parents had to fight with the municipality to find the right spot for Emmy. They realized that inclusion seems not to be the most normal thing in Denmark.
