Angelina Jolie returns to the spotlight in video plea to end child abuse

She has been understandably absent from the spotlight since filing for divorce from her husband of 12 years, Brad Pitt.

Now, two months of their split was announced, Angelina Jolie has returned to the public eye to make an impassioned plea to end child abuse worldwide.

The 41-year-old actress and humanitarian appeared in a short video clip to lend her support to the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) mission to protect the lives of children, saying, “I congratulate the office of the chief prosecutor and all those working on the policy.”

Jolie, who is a special envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, has been campaigning for the rights of children living in conflict zones such as Afghanistan and Syria for over 10 years.

She appeared in the video to lend her support to the ICC’s new Policy on Children, launched last Friday, which aims to crack down on crimes against children. The policy will become one of the key strategic goals of the ICC, with its members presenting a united front in their mission to end crimes against children and hold those who commit them accountable for their actions.

In the 30-second clip, Jolie said, “Successful prosecution and new legal benchmark, whether at the ICC or elsewhere, is part of the long and vital generational effort. That is the light in which I believe the court’s new policy on children should be seen.

“I particularly welcome the commitment to include charges for crimes against children, wherever the evidence permits, as part of a more systematic approach.”

Jolie has hardly been seen in public since announcing her decision to file for divorce from Pitt, 52, after stating that she had requested the dissolution of their marriage for the “health of the family”.

However, she released a statement earlier this month to say she was “relieved” her ex had been cleared of child abuse allegations, after Pitt was investigated by the LA Department of Children and Family Services for allegedly striking the couple’s eldest son, Maddox.

The pair’s divorce negotiations have largely focussed on who will receive custody of their six children: Maddox Jolie-Pitt, 15, Pax Jolie-Pitt, 12, Zahara Jolie-Pitt, 11, Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, 10, and eight-year-old twins Knox Jolie-Pitt and Vivienne Jolie-Pitt.
