Fashion journalist Anna Piaggi, whom Manolo Blahnik dubbed “the world's last great authority on frocks,” has died aged 81.

The writer and style icon was found dead in her home in Milan today (7 August), Italian media reported.

Piaggi was feted for her artistic flair and elaborate spreads, often showcased on the pages of Vogue Italia.

With her trademark pale blue hair and flamboyant, dandified style, she was a regular on the front row of catwalks across the world.

A darling of the fashion set, she was sketched by Karl Lagerfeld and Manolo Blahnik, and was the muse of British milliner Stephen Jones.

Adored by designer and editors alike, she was often pictured in her element at showbiz parties and high-profile events, her eccentric fashion sense taking centre stage.

Twitter was quick to respond to news of her death today, with tributes pouring in.

"So sad to hear that Anna Piaggi, one of my last icons of beauty & fashion has passed. She was the height of glamorous eccentricity," wrote Burlesque star Dita Von Teese.

Vogue Italia editor Franca Sozzani said, "Will remember you for ever Anna".
