The wife of a French councillor is accused of dressing up as Catwoman and waiting in the garden bushes to try to kill him, in a bizarre criminal case that has captivated local media.
Laurence Honoré, 44, allegedly masterminded the attempted murder plot on 14 June, outside the home she shared with her husband in the upmarket suburb of Saint-Maurice in northeast Paris.
According to The Telegraph, she dressed in the iconic Batman costume, along with latex gloves and a crash helmet as she waited in the garden bushes for her municipal councillor husband to return home.
She was brandishing a .22 Long Rifle revolver but was unable to fire it when her husband finally arrived at around midnight, following an apparent change of heart.
Her husband Christian, who is described by friends as "a good guy" but "a little paranoid" apparently "sensed a presence" as he walked through the garden. He pulled out his phone to call for help and then spotted a shadow moving away from him that "seemed familiar." Minutes later, police arrived on-scene and arrested Laurence as she walked calmly to her car.
She was charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder and later admitted to stalking her husband with an intent to kill. A bodyguard and a former French spy have also been implicated in the attempted assassination plot. Both deny involvement.
The motive for the attack is still unclear; until recently Laurence appeared a model housewife and politician's spouse who once wrote a blog about her happy home life titled "My Crazy Family" that formed part of her husband's failed bid to become town mayor in 2008.
However, she was in the process of divorcing Christian at the time of the incident, and claimed he subjected her to "repeated violence." Other friends have been quoted as saying she and her husband were an "explosive" couple.
One friend described Laurence as "well-dressed," telling La Parisien, "I find it hard to imagine her squatting in the bushes waiting for Christian with a gun in her hand."
