Crack out the bodysuits because Cher: The Musical is happening

cher the musical.jpg

We love a good musical at the best of times, but one about Cher? Featuring the music of Cher? With three different iterations of Cher?

Excuse us while we book flights.

The iconic singer has confirmed on Twitter that a musical based on her life is going ahead, scheduled to hit Broadway in 2018.

There were reports of a cast read-through in January being a chance for Cher, 71, to review the script and decide whether the project, written by Jersey Boys’ Rick Elice, had her blessing.

According to her Twitter account, it met with her rapturous approval.

But it wasn’t until this week that a time frame emerged for the show, thought to be titled Cher: The Musical, and that the singer confirmed it would indeed combine the musical essentials of “actors, dancers, singers” in a theatre, no less (phew).

Responding to a fan who asked what it will be about, she responded simply: “ME”.

A New York Post report in January said the show will chronicle her life, from her childhood in LA to her rise to global fame, and three actors will play her at various times – roles named in a previous casting call as Babe, Lady and Star.

It will of course feature the late Sonny Bono, former husband and duo partner, plus her various reinventions and film roles.

Jeffrey Seller (Hamilton) and Flody Suarez (Rise) are producing, while Jason Moore (Avenue Q and Pitch Perfect) directs.

Worth a New York jaunt for sure, and we can only hope it makes its way across the pond.
