We’ve often wondered what it would be like to get stuck on a desert island with David Beckham – and now, finally, it seems as if we’re about to find out. Sort of, anyway.

The footballer and fashion icon is set to star on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, to mark the show’s 75th anniversary – which means that we’ll learn all about the musical tracks he’d smuggle away with him if he was forced to make like Tom Hanks in Castaway.

More importantly, it should help us to answer that age-old question; which Spice Girls song does Becks love the most?

We’ve always figured it’d be 2 Become 1, if only for Victoria’s solo part, but we’re willing to have our eyes opened to new possibilities…

Speaking about his upcoming appearance on BBC Radio 4, Beckham says: “I’m delighted to join Desert Island Discs for its 75th anniversary celebrations.

“Music has been a huge part of my - and my family’s - life and it is a real pleasure to highlight that on such an iconic programme.”

Hmm – the use of the word ‘family’ suggests he’s going to be considering the musical gifts of not just Victoria, but his children, too.

Maybe Cruz’s Christmas song will make it to the island too, then?

Kirsty Young, presenter of Desert Island Discs, is naturally very excited to have Beckham on the show.

She explains: “Seventy five is a birthday worth celebrating and having David Beckham as my Castaway seems like the perfect gift.

“His sporting legacy is of course extraordinary. And along with his charisma, cultural impact and humanitarian work, he is a modern man of many parts.

“He’ll be a fascinating guest to welcome on to my little interview island!”

Beckham is set to make his Desert Island Discs debut on Sunday 29 January, as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations – but the party will begin on 28 January with a special three hour programme on BBC Radio 4 Extra, featuring some of the wonderful voices from the archive and extracts from recently rediscovered episodes, which will also be restored to the show’s online archive.

Sunday’s episode of Desert Island Discs will also pay homage to the occasion by re-introducing the sound of sea wash to the opening and closing of the programme for the first time since the 1960s.
