Downton Abbey Season 5: what to expect

Beware: here be spoilers

It feels like an eternity that Downton Abbey has been away from our screens but thankfully after the summer you can bet your stiff upper lip that once again you'll be able to enjoy the dramas of the Crawley family and their staff.

So, what do we know about the upcoming series? Well, it's definitely happening, seeing as Michelle Dockery (AKA Lady Mary) shared this picture on Instagram last month.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress revealed that she will never leave the show.

"I’m here till the end, whenever that may be."

We also know that Richard E. Grant is going to appear in the upcoming series, which is brilliant news.

Returning to the small screen will be all the favourites, including Tom Branson, Lady Edith, The Dowager Countess and Lord Grantham.

During a set visit, THR discovered the actors, when on a break, like to play games, and especially Wink Murder as it turns out, which apparently "helps at dining room table scenes".

To pass the time they also play a movie game. "Someone names a film and you name an actor in that film, and it passes on. It’s great fun when we’re all here together."

In the same piece, Laura Carmichael says that she's got a bit of an issue with ordering flowers while she's on set as she can't get a 3G signal. Which we understand is all very annoying, but this doesn't tell us much about the upcoming series.

In light of this fact, we've detailed below what we'd like to happen in the upcoming series and the people we'd like to appear.

Things we’d like to know in Downton Abbey series 5:

Who will Lady Mary pick?

You'll recall that last season Lady Mary was faced with a dilemma - she was trying to decide between two men who had fallen in love with her. On the one hand she had Lord Gillingham and on the other she had Charles Blake. Oh, we don't have a preference. WE JUST WANT MATTHEW BACK.

Is Lady Edith ever going to be allowed to be happy?

We'd also really love it if Lady Edith gets to fall in love and actually be happy and have a lovely family with that nice editor man. Oh and get her baby back too.

Will Mr and Mrs Bates be OK?

Is something bad going to happen to Mr Bates? We're always worried something is going to happen to him.

People we'd like to see in Downton Abbey series 5:

Benedict Cumberbatch

His face and voice were MADE for period drama.

Sean Bean

Maybe he'll try to tempt Lady Grantham away from her husband or even the Dowager? Yeah, probably not, but we reckon he'd add a bit of drama to the show (like it needs anymore).

Helena Bonham Carter

She'd be an eccentric aunt or something like that, and of course she'd be absolutely brilliant.

Now you'll have to excuse us, we're just going to email Julian Fellowes and the producers of Downton to see what they think.
