Ellen DeGeneres is returning to stand-up comedy with a Netflix special

Despite becoming a household name as the host of her eponymous chat show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, it was stand-up comedy that gave Ellen DeGeneres her start in showbiz.

Launching her career as a stand-up comedian in the early 1980s, DeGeneres started out making the rounds at small clubs and coffee houses, before landing a gig as the emcee at a comedy club in New Orleans. Setting her sights on new horizons, the comedian soon moved on to a national tour before being named Showtime’s Funniest Person in America in 1982.

What followed was a glittering career spanning television and film, notably as the voice of Dory in Finding Nemo and Finding Dory, and now DeGeneres is finally returning to her comedic roots with a Netflix special.

Whether or not the project has been in the pipelines for a while we don’t know, but the news was confirmed on Twitter when Netflix put it to DeGeneres that perhaps it was time...

And DeGeneres didn’t need much persuading before committing to the gig...

No further details have been released but DeGeneres confirmed the news on her show on Wednesday telling the audience that ‘earlier this week, I got a Tweet from the people at Netflix and I have good news and bad news. The bad news is they wouldn’t tell me what happened to Barb on Stranger Things, but the good news is they asked if I was interested in doing a stand-up special. I said I’m going to have to think about it and then 30 seconds later I said yes. Exciting!’

As yet, we don’t know when the show will air but we do know that DeGenres is already working on it.

In a statement released through Netflix, Degeneres said ‘it has been 15 years since I did a stand-up special. 15 years. And I’m writing it now, I can’t wait. I’ll keep you posted when and where I’m gonna shoot my Netflix special. I’m excited to do it; I’m excited for you to see it. And now, each one of you, you get to Netflix & chill with me. How about that?’
