One of the perks of being a successful Hollywood star, apart from the money and adoration of course, must surely be the opportunity to meet your personal heroes.

So actress Emma Stone must be on cloud nine to have had the honour of being interviewed by her own beloved idol Diane Keaton, after having waxed lyrical about her for years.

Stone, who once said of Keaton "I talk about her so damn much that she’s probably scared of me", discussed diehard fans, beauty and her fear of failure with the Annie Hall star for the latest issue of Interview magazine, as well as musing on "poetic" boyfriend Andrew Garfield - though the exchange was before reports the couple of three years were on a 'break'.

Praised as being "unconventionally beautiful" by Keaton, the 26-year-old Oscar nominee was then asked to define beauty, and revealed, "The more unique the better.

"When you feel that a person is being true to how they want to look or what their face is, I think there's something about the acceptance of oneself that I can feel from people. That tends to be what I'm attracted to."

She went on to discuss her career, and explained how taking the stage role of Sally Bowles in Cabaret had made her less afraid of failure.

"I feel more like I understand acting in a different way. It's totally different when you're shooting something," she said. "But only in the past six months to a year have I felt like I can really try these different things. I think I was really scared of that for a long time. And if something was really challenging, I thought that I was just going to fall on my face and embarrass myself. I'm just less scared of that now, of failing."

The young star also spoke about then-boyfriend and Spiderman co-star Andrew Garfield, though the two are rumoured to have since taken some time apart. Keaton relayed a sweet quote Garfield had given once, which read, "Working with Emma was like diving into a thrilling, twisting river and never holding on to the sides. From the start. To the end. Spontaneous. In the moment. Present. Terrifying. Vital. The only way acting with someone should be."

Asked how the glowing praise had made her feel, Stone laughed and said: "He is such a poet. But that's the way he writes in general. So I hear it and of course my heart swells up. And I also know that he writes things like that on a daily basis... He's so poetic."

She also revealed he is still as obsessed with acting as she was as a child, telling Keaton: "I definitely did know that I really liked to perform. That was definitely clear to me. While taking my correspondence courses at home, I was absolutely obsessed, and I remain pretty obsessed to this day, though hopefully in a more grown-up way."

And she had a few words on the idea of having her own fans. Referring to her admiration for Keaton, Stone said: "I know what it is to be a fan. But I don't think I've ever really considered the idea of having fans. I think I'm always sort of ducking that... But when someone comes up to you and says something truly heartfelt about work you've done, that means a lot."
