Bake Off’s Mel Giedroyc confirms Eurovision 2017 project: "I am positively giddy"

Mel Giedroyc may have resigned from The Great British Bake Off – but she’s not preparing to disappear from our televisions anytime soon.

Not only is she rumoured to be working on a new baking project with Mary Berry, Sue Perkins, and Nadiya Hussain (more on that later), but she’s also going to play a big part in selecting the UK’s Eurovision 2017 entry.

Eurovision: You Decide is set to air on BBC Two early next year, after launching a nationwide search for six brand new songs.

The performers will take to the stage during the 90 minute show (which will air live from the world famous Hammersmith Apollo) in a bid to impress viewers at home and a panel of professional judges.

The prize will be the honour of representing the UK at the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kyiv, Ukraine. And, naturally, the winner will be revealed later that same night after a live public vote.

Giedroyc, who will be presenting the show, told What’s On TV: “I am positively giddy for Eurovision 2017 and chuffed that Eurovision: You Decide is back.

“I’ve been hearing great things about the standard of the songs this year and I just wish January would hurry up so that I can hear the songs and meet the performers!”

She added: “We’ve got an even bigger venue, exciting guest performers and a brilliant expert panel. It’s going to be great.”

Giedroyc, along with presenting partner Sue Perkins and judge Mary Berry, quit Bake Off earlier this year when she learned that it would be moving to a new home on Channel 4.

However, while viewers were left worrying about the future of GBBO, the BBC has since hinted that all three are set to team up with Nadiya Hussain for a project of their own.

Director of Content Charlotte Moore said: “There will be more news on what Mary Berry, Mel and Sue and Nadiya are doing next.

“Watch this space – some exciting news to come.”

BBC representatives refused to give any further details about the project, or even to confirm that it would be a baking show.

Meanwhile Paul Hollywood, who has signed a new three-year contract with Channel 4, has reassured viewers that Bake Off will remain exactly the same on its new channel.

Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show, Hollywood said: “The Bake Off won’t change in the sense that the format will stay exactly the same, the tent will stay the same, the challenges and really the bakers [will not change].

“Ultimately, it comes down to when the bakers get in the tent next year, then it will be a special thing. I’m really excited about it and I think it will do a great job; I’m going to make sure that we keep it the same.”

Otherwise you can wait and see whether Mary, Nadiya, Mel, and Sue’s show might be worth scoring a place on instead…

Eurovision: You Decide is set to air on BBC Two at 7.30pm on Friday 27 January 2017.
