Evan Rachel Wood’s inspiring reason for wearing a tuxedo to the Golden Globes

Hollywood’s most famous faces stepped out in an array of designer dresses and ornate ballgowns for last night’s Golden Globes ceremony; however Evan Rachel Wood, one of Westworld’s standout stars, bucked the trend and stepped out in a sharp tuxedo suit instead.

Speaking from the red carpet, she told the world’s press: “This is my third nomination. I’ve been to the Globes six times, and I’ve worn a dress every time.

“I love dresses – I’m not trying to protest dresses, but I wanted to make sure that young girls and women know they aren’t a requirement.”

Wood added: “You don’t have to wear a dress if you don’t want to… just be yourself, because your worth is more than that.”

That is all...

Fans immediately flocked to social media to praise the star for her words, with one writing: “You’ve got my respect.”

“Exactly,” commented another.

And one more wrote: “Women wearing fewer dresses and more trousers is the easiest and most guaranteed way to remind men that they do not define society.”

However others were less than impressed by Wood’s statement, with some accusing her of “fabricating” an issue.

“When did the patriarchy enforce wearing a dress?” said one. “I thought it was a woman’s choice what she decided to wear.”

One user replied: “When white feminists decided to use it to fit their narrative.”

Wood had another very good reason for wearing a suit; she wanted to pay tribute to some of the people who had inspired her throughout her career.

"I said this year I'm going to [pay] homage to Marlene Dietrich and Victor Victoria and David Bowie, because it's his birthday," she told reporters of her custom Joseph Altuzarra suit.

She had, earlier that day, posted a birthday post to the late Bowie, who died on 10 January in 2016 – just two days after his 69th birthday.

Wood was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama for her performance on Westworld.

She lost to Claire Foy, who took home the gong for her portrayal as Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s The Crown.

In her acceptance speech, Foy gave a shout out to the reigning monarch, calling her “extraordinary.”

Noting that the Queen “has been at the centre of the world for 63 years”, she declared: “I think the world could do with a few more women at the centre of it, if you ask me.”
