From Cheryl Cole to Angelina Jolie: the most surprising celebrity whirlwind weddings

As the news breaks that Cheryl Cole has wed French boyfriend of three months - Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini - in a small ceremony with just four witnesses, we take a look at other secret and whirlwind celebrity weddings...

Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton

How long before they got hitched: Two months

Where they met: On set of the movie Pushing Tin, while playing husband and wife

Married for: Just two years before they divorced

The details: This couple were renowned for their public displays of affection and it was rumoured that they walked down the aisle wearing matching vials of each other's blood around their necks. They tied they knot in May 2000, straight after Angelina had finally divorced Jonny Lee Millar, at Little Church of the West Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas. However, Ange filed for divorce in 2002.

Agyness Deyn and Giovanni Ribisi

How long before they got hitched: They were apparently dating for "a while" before they walked down the aisle. According to reports, Agyness was still single in March of the year they got married and 39-year-old Giovanni had been living with his then partner, singer Cat Power, and his 14-year-old daughter until two months' before him and Agyness, 31, tied the knot.

Where they met: Unknown

Married for: Just over two years, they got hitched in June 2012, and are still going strong

The details: Little is known about this incredibly private couple's life. Giovanni Ribisi, who's well-known for starring as Phoebe's brother in Friends, and model Agyngess Deyn, who's modeled for Burberry, had known each other for a bit and then just decided to get married. They turned up at the Los Angeles County Registrar's office and were passionately kissing - which is the first the world knew of their whirlwind romance.

Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford

How long before they got hitched: A year

Where they met: Rather sweetly, these guys were meant to have been pen pals when they were younger, although when they met in later life, they fell in love

Married for: They've recently celebrated their second anniversary

The details: Carey Mulligan, who stared in the Great Gatsby, wed Mumford & Sons frontman, Marcus Mumford, in a rustic-themed ceremony in the middle of the Somerset countryside. The An Education star had eight bridesmaids and were dressed in turquoise knee-length prom dresses with matching blue high-heels. The star-studded guest list included Sienna Miller, Jake Gyllenhaal and Colin Firth. Oh, and renowned photographer Rankin took their wedding snaps.

Amal Alamuddin and George Clooney

How long before they got hitched: Seven months before they got engaged

Where they met: Through a mutual friend at a charity fundraising event in September 2013

Married for: If George Clooney's letter to the Daily Mail is anything to go by, we imagine we won't hear about the wedding until after it's happened

The details: George Clooney is notoriously private about his personal life and him and Amal Alamuddin have kept a low profile, not least because he wanted her to be able to carry out her job as a human rights lawyer without all the media attention. While there were rumours that the couple were set to wed in Highclere Castle, AKA Downton Abbey, those rumours were well and truly quashed with George's letter.

Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett

How long before they got hitched: Three weeks

Where they met: Although the pair starred in The Player in 1992, they didn't actually share a scene. Reports say the two didn't actually meet until three weeks before saying 'I do' in 1993.

Married for: 21 months before parting ways

The details: This couple got married in 1993, and the wedding took place at St. James Lutheran Church in Marion, Indiana, near where Lovett was appearing on tour with his band. The guests were only given 72 hours' notice and included guests such as Susan Surandon. By March 1995, the couple separated, and subsequently divorced. On their break-up, the couple said: "We remain close and in great support of each other."

Cheryl Cole and Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini

How long before they got hitched: Three months

Where they met: At the Cannes festival in May 2014

Married for: One week and counting...

The details: Cheryl's quickie wedding was announced today. The singer and her French boyfriend tied the knot in a private ceremony in Mustique with just four witnesses, including Cheryl's mother. The 31-year-old posted up a picture of her beautiful engagement and wedding ring on her Instagram account (pictured below), with the following statement: "I usually do not discuss my personal life but to stop the speculation I want to share my happy news. Jean-Bernard and I married on 7/7/14. We are very happy and excited to move forward with our lives together".

On the way to Edinburgh during Cheryl's birthday. Jean-Bernard is on the left.

Renée Zellweger and Kenny Chesney

How long before they got hitched: Five months

Where they met: At the Concert of Hope tsunami benefit

Married for: Four months

The details: This couple got married on a beach in May 2005 but after four months of marriage, the Bridget Jones' Diary star cited fraud as the cause of the breakup. Guests included family members and close friends but apparently no celebrities. Renée wore a long, white, strapless wedding gown designed by Carolina Herrera and Kenny wore a white long sleeved shirt and gray slacks and a his black Stetson, of course. Both Kenny and Renée were barefoot during the fifteen minute ceremony. Kenny later revealed to Oprah that he "panicked" when the couple got married, and also that he "just wasn't ready".
