“This is how I really look!” Gillian Anderson hits back at tabloid's ageist Botox rumours

After a 14-year hiatus, the unbeatable duo of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully returned to our screens last Monday for the 10th series of the X-Files.

Those of us who lived through the first nine series and remain convinced that the American government are working hard to cover up the existence of alien life forms, were thrilled to have Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny back in our lives, but other people had different reactions to the show’s return.

A Daily Mail article, published later in the week and entitled ‘Ageless Gillian and the BotoX Files’, speculated the various forms of plastic surgery Anderson must have had in order to appear so youthful, describing her skin as "miraculously wrinkle-free."

The article, which sought the advice of plastic surgeons to analyse a picture of Anderson’s face, concluded that Anderson must have had a nose job, lip fillers, cheek fillers, botox, neck tightening, a chin lift and eyelid surgery.

Anderson, 47, who recently appeared as society hostess Anna Pavlovna in BBC One’s War & Peace, took to Twitter to slam the article, tweeting a photograph of the face analysis, and saying:

“If it weren’t so sad, this bollocks would have made my day.”

The Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress then linked to a tweet by The Everyday Sexism Project, that says:

“How we respond to the release of new work by a talented and successful woman in 2016…... #Everydaysexism”

Anderson later added a tweet with a photograph of herself from a recent event, saying:

“This is how I really look! #ageingwithoutshame.”

Anderson recently opened-up about body image in an interview with The Edit, saying: “I’m not perfect, you know? I’ve got flabby thighs, I’m ageing and I’m 5’3’’.”

The blatant ageism – which, curiously, didn’t even pay attention to how Duchovny has changed in the intervening years – comes mere months after Anderson revealed that the producers of the X-Files offered her half the salary of what Duchovny was offered
