“Not marrying my partner kept us together:” Goldie Hawn on the secret to lasting love

Goldie Hawn has opened up about the secret to her 33-year-long relationship with actor Kurt Russell.

Speaking on Loose Women, the 70-year-old actor explained that not getting married has been the key to their success as a couple.

Hawn, who has been married twice – to Gus Trikonis and Bill Hudson – before she met her current partner, Russell, said on the programme that:

“I would have been long divorced if I ever married [Kurt].”

The Shampoo star explained that not signing a contract meant her and her partner choose to stay together, rather than feeling obligated to:

“Marriage is an interesting sociological thing. If you need to be bound to someone, then it’s important to be married.

“If you have independence, if you have enough money and enough sense of independence and you like your independence, there is something psychological about not being married because it gives you the freedom to make decisions one way or the other.

“So for me, I chose to stay, Kurt chose to stay, and we like the choice.”

She explained that while her children want to get married one day, they are happy that the couple are not – as it’s how they work best. Together, the couple shares a son – Wyatt - while Hawn also has two children – Kate and Oliver – from her relationship with Bill Hudson.

“Not every relationship works, and that is the truth, and I don’t care whether you’re a movie star, or just a person on the street,” she said.

“In a healthy, longer term relationship, I would say it’s great to be together about 68 per cent of the time,” she says about how much time to spend with your partner.
