Bake Off star Sue Perkins tells of living with a brain tumour for 8 years

The Great British Bake Off star Sue Perkins has revealed she has had a brain tumour for eight years.

The 45-year-old comedian and presenter told Good Housekeeping magazine that the non-cancerous tumour in her pituitary gland affects the secretion of reproductive hormones and prevents her from having children.

“We live in a time and place where we think everything is possible,” she said. “I don't know if I would have gone on to have children. But as soon as someone says you can’t have something, you want it more than anything.”

Perkins found out about the tumour during medical checks required for BBC show Supersizers.

“I'm lucky that it's benign so it's not in itself a worrying thing,” she said. “Sometimes it's big and makes me mad, and sometimes it's small and is in the background.

“Sometimes it screws up my hormones. I have various tests now to make sure the side effects aren't too onerous.”

Following the diagnosis, her comedy partner Mel Giedroyc went on to have two children.

“When she had her first child I thought: this is an experience I won’t have or share,” Perkins admitted. “You’ve gone somewhere I can’t go. You think it is going to destroy something, but actually it hasn’t destroyed anything - we have very different lives and different experiences now.”

Perkins, who is dating TV presenter Anna Richardson, tweeted a message of thanks to her fans for their concern:
