'We make it a priority to be together, so that the transition for the children wasn’t as brutal' Gwyneth Paltrow on rising above 'difficult' divorce

Gwyneth Paltrow says she and ex husband Chris Martin still do brunch together, even when they hate each other, for the sake of their two children.

The Oscar-winning actress, 42, admits she and Chris have been through "difficult times" since separating last year but they continue to put on a united front for their daughter Apple, 11, and nine-year-old son Moses.

"I think, unfortunately, though we couldn't stay in a romantic relationship, we're very, our values are very much around the importance of family and the importance of those relationships and I'm lucky that we're aligned in that way," Gwyneth said, appearing at a recent #BlogHer15 conference in New York.

"And it's been hard, and you know, like, we've gone through really difficult times with it but we've always said these children are our priority.

"What that really means is, 'Even though today you hate me and you never want to see me again, like, we’re going to brunch, because it’s Sunday and that’s what we’ll do,'" she continued. "The children are our commitment."

Gwyneth and Chris separated last year, after 10 years together. Their divorce was finalised in April.

"It’s imperfect but it gets better with time," Gwyneth says, of her current arrangement with Chris.

"We’re really good friends, I really like him. He’s great and he’s a great dad. I feel lucky that we’ve both along the way been able to put down our own stuff while we’re together with the family.

"We make it a priority to be together, so that the transition for the children wasn’t as brutal as it could be.

"Everyone does it in their own way," she added. "It’s so hard and I would never judge anyone for doing it any way [during divorce]. But just for us we thought if we could maintain the family, even though we’re changing shape a bit, that would be our ideal scene and so that’s what we’re trying to do."

Gwyneth famously announced her split from Chris last year in a post titled "Conscious Uncoupling" on Goop, the lifestyle website she founded.

"It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate," she said. "We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate.

"We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been."

The star met Coldplay singer Martin backstage at a gig in 2002. They married in a ceremony in Southern California a year later.

The couple were notoriously private and were rarely pictured together during their 11-year relationship, even as Gwyneth continued to attend a string of high-profile Hollywood events.

However, Gwyneth was candid about her marriage not being easy in the past.

"Sometimes it’s hard being with someone for a long time. We go through periods that aren’t all rosy. I always say, life is long and you never know what’s going to happen," she told Elle magazine in 2011.

Two years later, she told Glamour: "It’s hard being married. You go through great times, you go through terrible times. We’re the same as any couple."

In a more recent interview, the star said their divorce had taken the couple to a better place. "I feel like it's, in a way, the relationship we were meant to have," she said.
